domaine
de vaccelli
France - Corse - Cognocoli-Monticchi
Created in 1962 by Roger Courrèges, Domaine de Vaccelli sits on weathered granitic slopes in the valley of Taravu in the southern part of the Corsican appellation of Ajaccio. Alain, the son of Roger Courrèges, took over the estate in 1974, restructuring production around Sciaccarellu and Vermentinu, and constructing a modern winery in 1990. Since 2000, Alain’s son Gérard has been in charge of wine making. While the hills around Cognocoli-Monticchi (in Southern Corsica) have varied exposures, they are primarily oriented to the southeast. The family currently owns 28 hectares, 20% of which are over 50 years of average vine age. Though not certified, the vineyards have been farmed organically since 2008, and average very small harvests of 30 to 40 hl/ha. At present all vinification is carried out in temperature regulated stainless steel, with various different vessels used for aging incuding demi-muids and concrete eggs exclusively for the ‘Granit’ and ‘Cuvée Roger Courrèges’ wines). No fining is done, and only the whites are lightly filtered.
